Lebanon Oral Surgery
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Cartwright Dental offers comprehensive dental care, including oral surgery in Lebanon. We strive to offer the quality care our patients need under one roof. When you need additional dental services, such as orthodontics, we work with an orthodontist to ensure that you receive the care you need. We always focus on providing long lasting results, rather than temporary fixes.
Reasons to Remove Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth are a final set of molars that tend to erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. While they don’t always need to be removed, there are some situations that require removal. The determination is generally made with the help of x-rays that show the position of the teeth.
Wisdom teeth may need to be removed for reasons that include:
- Being impacted
- Insufficient room in the mouth
- Growing in at the wrong angle
- Gum disease
In some cases, you may experience pain as the wisdom teeth try to come in. Often, there is no pain, but a problem with the wisdom teeth is noticed in x-rays that are performed during your regular dental exam. If there is a problem, we will explain the issue and reason that wisdom teeth removal is recommended. We perform the oral surgery right in our Lebanon office.
What to Expect
Prior to the procedure, you will come to our office for an appointment. We will go over your health history, any medications you are taking, explain the procedure, discuss options for anesthesia, and answer any questions you may have about the procedure. During the procedure, we may use different types of anesthesia, depending on the specific needs of each patient.
We may use pain relief options that include:
- Local anesthetic, such as novocaine
- Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas
When the wisdom teeth are impacted or growing in the wrong direction, they may need to be cut out and removed from the gums and/or bone. The healing and recovery time for oral surgery may vary, depending on the scope of the surgery and type of anesthesia that is needed. In most cases, you will need someone to drive you home after the surgery.
Taking Care of Yourself After Surgery
The instructions you will be given depend on the work that was done. In some cases, patients are able to return to work quickly, even on the same day as the surgery. More commonly, you will need to give yourself a few days to heal. It is normal to have some swelling and discomfort.
You can help your recovery by:
- Using an ice pack for swelling
- Using moist heat for soreness
- Eating soft foods
- Gently exercising your jaw
If you are prescribed a medication for the pain, take it according to the instructions. A follow up visit will be scheduled to make sure that you are healing properly. If you have extreme pain, a fever, or swelling that isn’t improving, please contact our office.
